Somebody Should Do Something About That...
by Cameron Bradford / 1-21-10

Influence
The power to affect something or someone; the ability to change the development of fluctuating things such as conduct, thoughts or decisions

AT SOME LEVEL each of us has the power to influence the behavior of others. For instance, as a fitness coach I have been given an opportunity to make a difference in my industry. Am I a qualified therapist? Definitely not, but my position provides an opportunity to positively influence those I come into contact with. I'm known for my passion of rejecting excessive emphasis on physical appearance at the expense of mental, emotional and spiritual health and often express my belief that physical fitness is just one aspect of health. It is my hope this may reach someone struggling with society's primitive obsessions relating to money, sex and power.

We are all role models to someone (father, husband, volunteer, co-worker, coach, mentor, etc.). Each of us has been given an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those around us. Just as athletes have roles and responsibilities at various athletic positions and work with teammates on the court or field, in life we need to understand the position of influence we have each been given with our life teammates (family, friends, co-workers).

Living with an enhanced Quality of Life includes making a difference to as many individuals as we can along the way. We have an obligation to lift the spirits of others. Think of the times you have been in a slump and needed a boost. How about when things were going well? Do extend your hand to those around you needing a boost?

What is your unique position? What area of influence are you in to offer assistance to someone else? Each of us has a responsibility to help our teammates (humanity). This is not debatable. Be bold about your decision to make a difference. Stand out from the crowd instead of thinking, 'maybe someone else will do it'.

The Way It Is. By Bruce Hornsby 1986

It's easy to get swept away by our culture's current. I've felt the pull myself. It comes on at various times and we must be prepared for it. To me, the song below addresses the pressure to conform. In addition to poverty and racism the lyrics can be applied to your circle's thought process as it relates to aspects of life and opposing the path of least resistance. In a world of 6+ billion we cannot expect a single action to make a significant difference, but we can make a difference in our circle of influence rather than becoming part of the problem.

Standing in line marking time--
Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says "Get a job"

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
But don't you believe them

They say hey little boy you can't go
Where the others go
'Cause you don't look like they do
Said hey old man how can you stand
To think that way
Did you really think about it
Before you made the rules
He said, Son

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
But don't you believe them

Well they passed a law in '64
To give those who ain't got a little more
But it only goes so far
Because the law don't change another's mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is,
That’s just the way it is, it is, it is, it is
